All About Cabaret:

It’s cabaret season!

This year, we are leveling up with a 2-night run and a brand-new storyline celebrating High Expectations’ 10th anniversary!

We are creating an all-original show about a young woman who discovers a magical circus that is locked under the dark spell of an evil Ringmaster. As the young woman begins to get to know the members of the circus, she helps them rediscover their own power and transforms the circus into a place of joy and light.

This show format will be different from some of our past cabarets and student showcases. While we want to see your creativity expressed at the audition, we will be making final decisions about what characters will work best to fit the needs of the story. If you audition with a specific character, please be willing and ready to accept another character to fit with our narrative!

All About Auditon:

Here’s how the audition will work:

  1. You must register for the audition by July 24. Here is the registration link: https://forms.gle/QyZQoPjssURawPVH8

  2. You will perform 60-90 seconds on the apparatus/discipline of your choice. Think about portraying a specific character (see the list below for some character ideas to get you started). You can choose your song.

  3. After you perform your sequence, we will randomly draw an emotion/character out of a hat and ask you to perform again layering on the new emotion/character.

  4. Finally, you will perform a short sequence of scripted dialogue from the show.

You are allowed to audition more than one act (for example, a solo act and a duo act with a partner) but please note that each performer will likely be cast as only one character, so you may not be able to perform multiple acts in the show. Priority will be given to unique apparatuses, acts, and group pieces.

All About Characters:

We are looking for two main characters who will perform throughout the show:

Ringmaster/Narrator: This character must be comfortable projecting their voice and emoting through their words as they narrate the story. Aerial/ground work is encouraged but not required for this role

Young Woman: This character must be comfortable doing some dialogue. Familiarity with various aerial apparatuses or a willingness to learn is required.

Additional Characters No dialogue is required, proficiency with preferred discipline required. This list is not exhaustive, but simply a list of potential characters. Feel free to explore any characters related to circus tropes when creating your audition sequence!
